Why This Boat

A 20-foot center console is a workable size for Lake Erie. The boat tows behind a half-ton truck and launches at any public ramp on the lake, so a buyer can fish Cleveland one weekend and run to the islands or Sandusky Bay the next without paying for a slip.

Mercury sold this 150 as part of its SaltWater series, and the cowling carries that name. The owner reports the boat has only been in freshwater. That history matters most on a hull this old, because the corrosion and electrolysis that age a saltwater boat have not been part of this one's life.

The 2-stroke burns more fuel than a modern 4-stroke and runs on premix oil, so a buyer cross-shopping a newer outboard should account for that. In exchange it is light and inexpensive to service, and Mercury's 2003-era V6 has a long service record on the Great Lakes.

Twenty-three winters inside heated storage keeps gelcoat, wiring and upholstery out of the freeze-thaw cycle that does most of the damage to boats wintered outdoors in Ohio.
